Chapter 13
“You’re such a cheater,” I grumble as Brody shoots the eight-ball into the pocket that he’s called.
He barks out a laugh. “Babe.”
We’re downstairs in the bar after having had lunch. We’ve always been competitive with each other and playing pool was just one of the many things we used to do together.
I narrow my eyes at him. “I used to hold my own with you. What gives?”
His eyes go soft from across the table as he looks at me. “Not a lot to do except play pool when you don’t have your girl anymore.”
This makes me feel all melty inside and I give him a shy smile.
We gaze at each other across the table for a moment then it’s game on. “Okay, best five out of seven.”
He gives me his sexy half grin. “You’re on. What’re the stakes?” He chalks his cue stick as he raises an eyebrow.
“You lose you have to…” I squint at him trying to think of something he’d hate. Ah, got it. “Watch a romantic movie with me.”
I see his mouth tip up at the side. “Done.”
I start chalking my cue stick and look at him waiting to hear what I have to do if I lose but he’s only grinning as he racks the pool balls.
“What?” I frown.
He messes with the triangle rack thingy sliding it in short bursts back and forth on the table and when he stops and removes the rack, he smiles at me. “If you lose…”
I walk to the front of the table where he’s placed the cue ball. “My break.”
I stand and look at him waiting to hear what I have to do if I don’t win. He still doesn’t answer so whatever. I bend down, putting the stick between my fingers letting it glide through them as I line it up to hit the cue ball, and just as I push my stick to hit it, he says low, “You sit on my face.”
Of course, I miss the ball altogether and fall onto the damned table with a squeak and hear him chuckling.
“That was so not fair!” I hiss, pushing myself up off the table then giving him a dirty look.
“All’s fair in love and war, baby,” he says with a wink and I just shake my head at him.
“You’re rotten,” I mumble as I bend to break again. I turn my head to look at him. “Be quiet.” Then I hit the cue ball which sends the multicolored balls spinning across the table. When I stand, I add. “And you’re supposed to bet something I don’t want to do. Stripes,” I tell him and line my stick up to hit a striped ball in and miss.
“What fun is there in that?” he responds as he bends toward the table to take his shot, his eyes moving over it as he decides which ball he wants to hit.
